Urban Roads

The challenge

Municipal roads carry mixed traffic - vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and crossings - and uneven road illumination is what residents complain about and what safety audits flag. High electricity bills are usually the reason a retrofit programme exists in the first place. Retrofits have to work with existing pole positions and spacing, which rarely match the ideal for a new luminaire, and complex maintenance on live roads costs far more than the fitting it replaces.

What we specify

LED street lights designed to the EN 13201 lighting class your authority specifies, with the optic matched to the pole height and spacing that actually exist on site - pole spacing, not the luminaire, is usually the constraint that decides beam type, so photometric calculation comes before fixture selection. IP66 waterproof construction for year-round exposure to rain, dust and snow, with surge protection specified to your local supply and lightning incidence. Photocell for autonomous dusk-to-dawn operation, and smart city compatibility where the authority runs a management platform. Where poles are being reused, we confirm mounting diameter and wind-load rating of the existing column before ordering.

Highways

The challenge

High-speed roads need lighting that supports long sight distances and reveals hazard at distance rather than just lighting the tarmac. Interchanges and ramps create complex geometry with conflicting requirements. Maintenance on a live carriageway requires lane closure, which is expensive and disruptive - so long service life and minimal maintenance dominate the specification. Voltage drop over long feeder runs also has to be accounted for.

What we specify

High-output LED street lights with the beam distribution the carriageway width and lighting class require, calculated rather than assumed. We specify the longest service life and the highest surge rating in the range for these positions, because access cost dominates: a short product lifespan is the most expensive thing you can buy on a motorway. IP66 for continuous weather exposure. Photocell for dusk-to-dawn, with smart city monitoring so faults report themselves instead of being found by inspection. For interchange and ramp areas we plan the additional aiming angles needed, which often require a different optic from the main carriageway.

Industrial Parks

The challenge

Access roads inside industrial estates carry a mix of cars, heavy trucks and sometimes pedestrians, often with no footway. Lighting is owned and operated by the site rather than the municipality, so it has to tie into the site's own maintenance and security regime. Poor weather resistance and short product lifespan show up quickly on sites running three shifts. Yard and loading areas beside the roads usually need higher output than the road itself.

What we specify

LED street lights for the road geometry, with LED area lights specified separately for yard and loading areas where operations run at night. Control is grouped so security lighting and operational lighting follow different schedules - this is where most of the reduction in energy cost comes from. For sites with CCTV, we confirm the level supports camera performance at the coverage points, which is a common gap. IP66 waterproof and surge protection, with pole and foundation ratings confirmed for heavy-vehicle routes.

Parking Lots

The challenge

Open car parks are judged on uniformity more than on average lux - dark patches between poles are what users notice and what security assessments flag, and uneven illumination is the most common failure in this application. Poles are lower than on roads, which puts glare in the driver's eyeline. These sites are often unoccupied for long periods at night, so running full output until dawn is the main driver of high electricity bills.

What we specify

LED area lights designed for uniformity first, then checked against average level - the ratio matters more than the number. Optics and aiming set to control glare at typical driver eye height for the pole height used. Photocell for dusk-to-dawn, with scheduled or sensor dimming so the site drops to a security level overnight and returns to full output on detection. IP66 for year-round exposure. For covered or enclosed sections we switch to fixtures suited to enclosed space.

Campus Roads

The challenge

Campus and residential streets carry pedestrians as much as vehicles, so vertical illuminance - light on faces and on building entrances - matters as much as light on the road. High electricity bills are a standing concern for campus estates, and complex maintenance spread across a large site is what makes a cheap specification expensive. Dark-sky and light-trespass limits increasingly apply, which rules out poorly shielded fixtures.

What we specify

LED street lights with controlled uplight where a dark-sky or trespass limit applies, verified against the local ordinance rather than assumed. Optics chosen to deliver both horizontal and vertical illuminance at pedestrian scale. Photocell as standard, with smart city compatibility where the campus runs a central platform - a whole estate can then be scheduled and monitored from one place instead of per circuit. Warmer colour temperature, typically 3000 K, where the client's scheme calls for it. Consistent appearance across the site, including matching pole and bracket finishes.

Public Areas

The challenge

Public spaces are lit for people rather than for vehicles, and the brief is usually partly architectural. Coastal and waterfront sites add salt exposure, where poor weather resistance ends a fixture early. Fixtures sit within reach of the public, which raises both vandal resistance and safety requirements. Events and seasonal use mean the lighting has to work in more than one mode, and complex maintenance in a public space is disruptive to the people using it.

What we specify

LED area lights with the beam spread and aiming suited to the space geometry, plus architectural accents where the scheme calls for them. IK08 minimum in publicly accessible positions, IK10 where vandalism is a known problem. IP66 waterproof with marine-grade finish for waterfront and coastal exposure. Photocell for dusk-to-dawn, with dimming or scene control so the space runs at an event level and a lower overnight level - that scheduling is what turns a reduction in energy cost into a reduction in carbon emissions. Long service life specified to keep maintenance out of public hours.

Outdoor & Street FAQ

01What is the best LED street light for municipal roads?

The best street lighting solution depends on road classification, pole height, traffic density, and lighting standards. High-efficiency LED street lights with optimized optics provide excellent road visibility while minimizing energy consumption.

02How much energy can LED street lights save?

Compared with traditional high-pressure sodium lamps, LED street lighting can reduce electricity consumption by 50% to 80%, significantly lowering municipal operating costs.

03What IP rating should outdoor lighting have?

Outdoor street lights should have at least IP66 protection to withstand rain, dust, snow, and other challenging weather conditions throughout the year.

04How long do LED street lights last?

Premium LED street lights typically have a service life of 100,000 hours, reducing replacement frequency and lowering maintenance expenses for municipalities.

05Can LED street lights be integrated into smart city systems?

Yes. Modern LED street lights can support photocells, motion sensors, wireless monitoring, adaptive dimming, and smart city management platforms.

06How do LED street lights improve road safety?

High-quality LED lighting improves driver visibility, enhances pedestrian safety, reduces glare, and provides more uniform road illumination compared with traditional lighting technologies.
